Bill Jolley

Fleming Lex Jolley, M.D. 1924-2004 Devoted husband, father and grandfather. Leader in Medicine, Fleming Lex Jolley, M.D., of Sea Island, Georgia passed away on November 5, 2004. Dr. Jolley was born on September 5, 1924 in Smyrna, Georgia to Lex and LeoDelle Lassiter Jolley. He graduated from Marietta High School in 1941, and attended Oxford College of Emory University and Emory University,from which he received his M.D. degree in 1946 at the age of twenty-one.He received his training in neurological surgery at Columbia University Medical School in New York City, and was a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy from 1949 thru 1951. He was a practicing neurosurgeon at the Emory Clinic and a member of the Emory University Medical School faculty from 1950 thru 1979, when he re-located his surgical practice to Brunswick, Georgia, to be near the Sea Island home that he loved. While at Emory, he trained many of the neurosurgeons who are currently practicing throughout the southeast and the nation. Dr. Jolley was a leader in the medical profession, serving as president of the Medical Association of Georgia in 1976 and 1977. He was a member of the American College of Neurological Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons, The Harvey Cushing Society, the Southern Neurological Society and President of the Georgia Chapter of the American College of Surgeons. His faith was important to him. For many years he was a member of St.Luke's Episcopal Church in Atlanta. At Sea Island, he was a member of Christ Church, Episcopal and also enjoyed attending services at Frederica Presbyterian Church. Dr. Jolley was a great friend and benefactor of his alma maters, Oxford College at Emory University and the Emory University School of Medicine. In 1999 he received the Emory Medal from the Alumni Association of Emory University recognizing his significant contributions to the life of Emory University. The Fleming Jolley Residential Center at Oxford College of Emory University is named in his honor. He was an avid sportsman, particularly enjoying golf, fishing and bridge. He was a member of the Sea Island Club and Ocean Forest at Sea Island. He had a great zest for and enjoyment of life, and his family and friends will miss him. Dr. Jolley is survived by his wife, Bettye Irby Jolley of Sea Island and was preceded in death by his first wife, Anne Hoyt Jolley. He is also survived by his sister, Malinda Jolley Mortin of Kennesaw, Georgia; his children, Ruthanna Jolley and William L. Bost, Jr., F. Lex and Rebecca Jolley, all of Atlanta, William Hoyt and Carolyn Jolley of Niceville,Florida, Lane Irby of Tiger, Georgia, Betsy Irby, William Neal and Angie Irby, John Hampton and Abby Irby, all of Atlanta; his grandchildren,Catherine Bost Peters and Craig Peters, William and Helen Bost, Eleanor Jolley, Carley, Andee and Baily Jolley, Hampton, Melissa, Will, Quinn,Virginia and Neal Irby; and great grandchildren Will and Margaret Peters and Heyward Bost. A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, November 8, 2004 at 3:00 P.M. at Christ Church, Episcopal, St. Simons Island. Dr. Jolley had a special interest in the Hospice of the Golden Isles, and the family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Hospice of the Golden Isles, 1692 Glynco Parkway, Brunswick, Georgia 31525.
